Learning cannot be separated from living well. Healthy, happy students are better equipped to learn. In the bustle of busy student life eating right, getting enough sleep and exercise, and being mindful of one's health can be difficult, which is why the services supporting student health and welfare are so important.
Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS, or YTHS in Finnish)
FSHS provides health services for university students in Finland in the areas of general health, mental health, and oral health. The FSHS Oulu health centre is located in the Linnanmaa campus area at Yliopistokatu 1 A. Students are entitled to free medical examinations and consultations, vaccinations, and general medical treatment. They are also entitled to free X-ray examinations, laboratory tests, and physical therapy with a Student Health Foundation doctor’s referral. Specialists’ appointments, dental care, long-term psychiatric consultation, and speech therapy are available for a nominal charge. In addition, FSHS Oulu offers free physical therapy groups that are available without a doctor’s referral.

OTHER HELP WITH MENTAL HEALTH:
Student Counselling Psychologist
Oulu University student counselling psychologist offers free guidance and counselling in questions related to learning, studying, life management, and welfare. Special study arrangements are available for students with certain conditions (such as hearing or visual disability, other sensory disability, dyslexia, panic disorder, or Asperger's syndrome). There are also various different kinds of support groups for students.
A typical student spends a lot of time in lectures and computer labs, and may suffer from lack of physical activity. Exercise is not only important for the overall health, but also for the ability to learn and concentrate.
Sports and academic sport services provided by Oulu's Institutes of Higher Education offers sports and well-being services for students and staff. The Sports Pass is an entrance ticket to a multitude of disciplines, training sessions, and other services. It also allows for discount on some course fees and services provided by cooperating business partners.
Student guilds, nations, and other student organisations may have their own exercise groups. Some private service providers offer discount prices for students. The sports opportunities provided by the City of Oulu include, for example, beaches and swimming pools, exercise halls, bicycle routes, skiing tracks, sports centres, and fields.
OTHER USEFUL LINKS:
A healthy, balanced diet influences a student's ability to learn and achieve academically. With the student ID card, the basic lunch costs around 2.60 € in the Fazer Amica student cafeterias found on campus and around town. Some local restaurants offer discount prices for students. FSHS offers limited access to nutrition counselling.
Well-being, of course, is more than having health check-ups, eating right, sleeping well, and exercising. Relaxation, hobbies, culture, and downtime with friends and family are just as important for one's well-being as any of the above!
