Basic and postgraduate education
Department of Clinical Genetics provides basic education in clinical genetics for the approximately 140 students of the medical school and maintains a postgraduate training programme at the resident level in clinical genetics. Currently there is one trainee position for physicians specialising in clinical genetics. The department also provides scientific education by supervising and conducting studies for doctoral theses and other research projects in clinical genetics and related fields.
The research focuses in genetic causes and genotype-phenotype correlations of genetic (both rare and multifactorial) disorders in Northern Finland. The researchers participate in multicenter national and international research projects. The results are published in acknowledged international scientific journals.
The department is associated with the Department of Clinical Genetics at Oulu University Hospital participating in the patient care, and collaborates with the Genetics Laboratory of Nordlab Oulu in clinical research and cytogenetic and DNA analyses.
