Currently ongoing project 2017-2021 (with Prof. Markku Orell & Dr. Panu Välimäki): ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION IN TROPHIC INTERACTIONS IN CHANGING BOREAL FOREST HABITATS

  • The main question of this project is that how the trophic interctions of predators, their insect prey and food plants of insects adapt in changing climatic and environmental conditions in the north. We will determine the real food webs in our model ecosystem by applying next generation sequencing technique in identifying the insectivorous food of several passerine species. This real trophic interaction model will then be applied in studying the role of genetic adaptation in the important life-history traits (e.g. timing of breeding, reproductive investment).

Earlier projects: EVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO TROPHIC INTERACTIONS UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE

  • In this project, my interest focused on that how the northern resident bird species are adapted in changing climatic and environmental conditions. By studying long-term pedigree-structured population data it is possible to find out the roles of genetic and phenotypic adaptation and the evolutionary potential of the studied species. These studies combine population ecology and ecological quantitative genetics, and one of the main approaches is based on the 'animal model' -method.
